PRIVACY POLICY

Your desktop never
leaves your Mac.

The short version: LidMotion has no accounts and no telemetry — it reads your screen only to redraw it on the GPU, and the frames are discarded as fast as they arrive. Everything below is the long version of that sentence.

LidMotion for macOS & lidmotion.xyz

1. Who this covers

LidMotion is a macOS app made and published by Ye Lwin Oo, a sole developer. This policy covers the LidMotion app, the lidmotion.xyz website, and the update and download endpoints the app and the site talk to.

For anyone who needs the legal label: Ye Lwin Oo is the data controller for the small amount of information described below. You can reach the controller at [email protected].

2. What we do not collect

LidMotion has no account system, no sign-in, no analytics SDK, no crash reporter and no advertising or tracking identifiers. In particular, we do not collect:

  • your name, email address, or any other contact detail;
  • screenshots, screen recordings, or any image of your desktop;
  • what apps you run, what windows are open, or what is on your screen;
  • keystrokes, clipboard contents, files, or documents;
  • location, contacts, calendars, photos, or microphone audio;
  • usage statistics, feature telemetry, or behavioural profiles.

Because none of this is collected, there is no LidMotion database of users, and nothing about you to sell, share, or hand over. We have never sold personal information and do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising.

3. What the app processes on your Mac

To animate the lid, LidMotion has to work with three things. All three stay on your Mac.

  • Screen frames. macOS hands the app the current contents of your display. Each frame is uploaded to the GPU as a texture, drawn as the effect, and discarded when the next frame replaces it. Frames are never written to disk, never buffered for later, and never transmitted off the machine.
  • The hinge angle. The app reads the lid angle reported by the hardware and uses it to scrub the effect. The value is used in the moment and not recorded.
  • Your preferences. The effect you picked, the accent colour, the direction, and whether update checks are enabled are stored locally in the app's own preferences on your Mac. Deleting the app removes them. They are not synced to us.

4. Permissions the app requests

LidMotion asks for exactly one macOS permission: Screen & System Audio Recording. macOS classifies any reading of the display under that permission, so an app that redraws your desktop has to hold it. LidMotion uses it only to read frames for the effect; it does not record audio, and it does not save or transmit anything it reads.

You can revoke the permission at any time in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording. Without it the effects cannot run, but the rest of the app keeps working.

5. Network activity

The app makes one kind of network request: an update check against downloads.lidmotion.xyz, which fetches a small file describing the latest version. It sends no identifier of you or your machine beyond what any HTTPS request necessarily includes, and you can switch it off in the app's settings.

As with any request over the internet, the server and its CDN temporarily see the connecting IP address, the requested file, and a user agent string in ordinary access logs. These logs exist for delivery, security, and abuse prevention, are kept for a short retention window by our hosting providers, and are not used to build a profile or linked to any individual.

6. This website

lidmotion.xyz is a static site hosted on Vercel. It sets no cookies and embeds no advertising or social pixels. Fonts are served from this site rather than a font CDN. The site fetches release information (version, size, checksum, changelog) from downloads.lidmotion.xyz.

Page views on this site are counted with Umami, a cookieless analytics service. It records aggregate page, referrer and coarse country and device data. It does not set cookies, does not fingerprint you, does not store your IP address, and does not follow you to other sites. None of it is tied to an identity, and the app itself sends nothing here.

The download total on the home page is a single anonymous number kept on Abacus, a public counter service. Pressing a download button adds one to it, and the page reads it back live. Nothing about you or your device is sent with that request, though Abacus, like any server, sees the IP address it comes from.

Our hosting provider processes standard server logs, including IP addresses, for delivery and security, under its own privacy terms.

7. Links that leave this site

The site links out to places like GitHub, X, and a one-off tip page. If you follow one of those links, you are on that service and its privacy policy applies, not this one. We receive nothing back from them about you, and no account is required to download or use LidMotion.

8. Children

LidMotion is not directed at children and knowingly collects no personal information from anyone, children included. If you believe a child's personal information has somehow reached us, write to [email protected] and it will be deleted.

9. Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights under laws such as the GDPR or the UK GDPR (access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection, portability) or the CCPA/CPRA (to know, delete, correct, and opt out of sale or sharing).

We honour those rights, with one honest caveat: because we hold no account, identifier, or profile for you, there is in practice nothing for us to look up, export, correct, or erase. We do not sell or share personal information, so there is no opt-out to exercise, and we do not discriminate against anyone for exercising a right. Where we do process the limited technical data in server logs described above, the legal basis is our legitimate interest in delivering the software securely. If you want to make a request, or complain to a supervisory authority, start by writing to [email protected].

10. Retention, security, and transfers

We keep no personal data of our own, so there is nothing for us to retain. Server logs held by our hosting and delivery providers are kept only for their short operational retention periods. All traffic to the site and the update endpoint is served over HTTPS. Those providers operate globally, so the technical data in their logs may be processed in countries other than yours, including the United States, under the safeguards in their own terms.

11. Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated version is posted on this page with a new effective date. Material changes — for example, if the app ever started collecting something it does not collect today — will also be noted in the release notes for the version that introduces them.

12. Contact
